This summer, we will be reflecting on Micah 6:8 for our camp theme, Do. Love. Walk. The passage is best understood when we back up a couple of verses.
Micah 6:6-8:
“With what shall I come before the Lord,
and bow myself before God on high?
Shall I come before him with burnt offerings,
with calves a year old?
Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams,
with ten thousands of rivers of oil?
Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression,
the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?”
He has told you, O mortal, what is good;
and what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God? (NRSV)
As the church prepares to enter the Lenten season, Micah’s question is still valid for us today. What kind of worship does God want from us? What kind of worship does God want from us right now? Right now, when there is so much pain and suffering around the globe.
What kind of worship does God want from us this year? This year when the politics cover our Facebook feeds and we feel division growing between neighbor and neighbor, church member and church member, country and country.
God’s answer is also still valid for us right now and tomorrow: Do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God.
Instead of ‘sacrificing’ that Diet Coke or giving up sweets this year, perhaps we could Do something, Love somebody, and Walk toward someone.
Might we spend these 40 days practicing justice, showing love in tangible ways, and walking with humility on our minds? Justice can be shown in volunteering to serve the poor or standing up to the bully. Kindness and love can be shown through words that give life and build our neighbor up instead of tear down. Walking in humility can be done in deferring to the person in front of us instead of speaking or acting first.
If you take on this Do, Love and Walk Lenten challenge, consider tying your action to something you do every day – brushing your teeth, starting your car, or touching your phone to check social media. Let those be reminders to stop and pray for God to show you how to Do, Love or Walk. And then pay attention to whom God sends your way.
This Lenten season, what does the Lord require of you?
