By this time of the year, all of our Group Leaders have received their leader packets that have all of the vital information that they need for camp. Included in that packet are all of the themes for our nightly parties. This is something that groups always look forward to as they begin to prepare for their grand entrance into each of the nightly events. One of the most highly anticipated parties of the week is the dance. The dance gives campers a chance to dress up and have fun with their new camp friends.
This summer’s theme, campers will want to reach back into their parent’s high school wardrobe and pull out all their 80’s apparel. We will “rock on down to Electric Avenue” for our 1980’s-inspired neon glow dance party! Expect black lights, glow in the dark games & a throwback playlist ( you can even listen to the playlist on Spotify).
The dance fun can begin way before camp even starts! We suggest throwing a group costume-making party. It’s a great way to make sure everyone feels included and excited for camp!
Here are some simple and easy costume ideas for groups.
Neon Tie-Dye: This is a great idea for a Sunday night event. Have your students bring a plain white t-shirt in their size. Provide neon tie-dye kits for your students. They can create their own design, using the colors of their liking. This will create a uniformed look for your group, but will give each student freedom to create their own designs.
Splatter Paint T-Shirts: Just like the first idea, have students provide their own white t-shirt, but provide neon colored, or glow in the dark fabric paint. Allow students to splatter the different colored paints onto their t-shirts. The neon or glow of the paint as well as the white shirts will glow brightly under the black lights.
Thrifting like a Pro: Take your group to the local thrift store and have them pick out 80’s themed apparel. Go with the traditional gym shorts, tube socks, and white headbands, or mix it up with bale bottomed jeans, tie-dyed shirt, and wallaby shoes.
Encourage your group to be creative. There will be a “Best Dressed” award given to the group who goes above and beyond in the creativity category.
So get ready to get your glow on at the Electric Avenue!
